A STUDY OF EPIDEMIOLOGIC FACTORS IN CARCINOMA OF THE UTERINE CERVIX




Abstract
205 Pathologically proved cervical cancer cases among 8,518 clients visited to the Cancer Detecting Center at the Severance Hospital from March 1962 to December 1969(8 years) were epidemiologically reviewed. Necessary, data were collected by interview prior to cytological examinations. Therefore epidemiologic method applied here is a kind of historical prospective` study.
1. Average annual prevalence rate was 2.41%, rang-_ing from 3.5% to 1.13%. The .prevalence rates were Aw, sharply decreased after 1967.: The prevalence rates among those who had no symptoms at the time of examination was 2.02%.
2. No cancer case was found among age less than 25. The total prevalence rate of the cancer was increased by the progress of age. But the prevalence rate of in situ cancer showed highest among 40^49 age group.
3. No case was detected among unmarried women. = The prevalence rate among married was 2.04%, but the rates among separated, widowed, and divorced were 2 to 3 times higher than married. The length of the coital life was positively related to ¢¥the prevalence of cervical cancer.
4. The age adjusted prevalence rate was ¢¥increased¢¥ by the increment of number of parities.
5. The prevalence rate among those who married at age before 20 was about four times higher than those married later than 20 year old.
6. Clients¢¥ visit to the Cancer Detecting Center was mostly motivated by the friend¢¥s advice(42.8%), mass _ media(12. 60) and only 3% by the general practioners.
